Por experiencia personal todos conocen cuán complejo es el mundo de las relaciones.
El ser humano es una criatura social, no precisamente porque ame tomar un aperitivo con los amigos, sino por su tendencia innata a interactuar con otros individuos. De hecho, la mente humana inicia a desarrollarse dentro de una relación, aquella que surge con sus padres.
Muchas son las investigaciones que han puesto en evidencia la necesidad del hombre, desde sus primeros días, de recibir cuidados afectivos para sobrevivir y crecer saludablemente.
Estamos impregnados de esta naturaleza relacional desde nuestro nacimiento y aún como adultos mantenemos la necesidad de interactuar con otros individuos; la dependencia en este sentido no debe preocuparnos pues es propio de nuestro patrimonio genético. Sin embargo, existen límites que no deberían superarse.
Muchas de estas relaciones, en efecto, en vez de edificarnos y ayudarnos a ser mejores, nos consumen, nos empobrecen, nos intoxican. Las relaciones tóxicas se definen así precisamente por su capacidad para envenenar la mente, la vida emocional y relacional de un individuo. Muy a menudo su propagación es subestimada debido a la incapacidad de reconocerlas, y más aún, de aceptar estar involucrado en una.
Todos hemos experimentado al menos una vez en la vida, una relación no muy beneficiosa o incluso dañina. Las relaciones tóxicas llevan esta eventualidad al extremo. Obviamente, la presencia de una o algunas de estas señales no debería empujarnos automáticamente a categorizar nuestra relación como tóxica, pero pueden ser señales de alarma que nos ayuden a reconocer que algo no está funcionando de la mejor manera.
La falta de confianza, que a menudo resulta en verdaderas conductas de control obsesivo, es una señal importante. La confianza es fundamental para poder convivir en paz. El respeto también es uno de los pilares más importantes de una relación sana. Sin respeto no hay amor, no hay amistad, no hay relación. Esto incluye comportamientos agresivos, violencia, insultos, críticas constantes e intentos de intimidación. Lejos de esto, el apoyo, la reciprocidad, la equidad y la cercanía emocional son ingredientes básicos de una relación.
Si sientes que estás dando mucho pero no recibiendo en proporción a tu esfuerzo, o si la relación se ha vuelto demasiado asimétrica, como si en el centro de todo estuviese siempre y solo el otro, es necesario hacer un chequeo y entender qué es lo que no funciona. Lo mismo puede suceder si te sientes constantemente solo debido al desinterés del otro (ten cuidado de reconocer cuando tu soledad proviene realmente de la relación en lugar de ser una constante de tu yo interior, en cuyo caso sería útil investigar sus raíces).
Cuando una relación está empapada de sentimientos y emociones negativas como ira, frustración, angustia, miedo, vergüenza, sin dejar suficiente espacio para la felicidad, la paz, la confianza, el apoyo, el crecimiento y el ánimo, puede ser útil preguntarse por qué sucede esto y si realmente vale la pena continuar.
El desinterés es una fuerte indicación de que algo no está funcionando. Al establecer una relación, todas las partes deben participar por igual. Los comportamientos centrados siempre y solo en uno mismo, la falta de comunicación, el distanciamiento excesivo o el deseo de evitar encontrarse, indican un desinterés por parte del otro.
Finalmente, podemos referirnos a las características generales de una buena relación. Una relación sana te hace sentir amado, feliz, libre para elegir y actuar, te fortalece, te anima, apoya y enriquece tu vida relacional y social.
Si una relación te hace sentir constantemente infeliz, triste, enojado, solo, insatisfecho, entonces podría ser el momento de distanciarte. Las relaciones son puentes entre el mundo que nos rodea y el mundo dentro de nosotros. Cuidar el corazón también significa reconocer a sus enemigos, y en algunos casos es necesario derribar algunos puentes antes de que sea tarde.
