¡Estoy gorda! He escuchado tantas veces esta expresión en compañeras, amigas, hermanas, tías, etc. Y obviamente la he escuchado de manera frecuente en mí. Esta expresión no viene sola, sino que en ocasiones está cargada de sentimientos de tristeza, culpa e incluso desánimo por cómo se ve nuestro cuerpo. La verdad es que el problema con nuestro cuerpo y nuestro peso es una lucha constante, que, aunque ocurre de manera más fuerte en las mujeres, no es patrimonio solo de nosotras pues también afecta a los chicos, aunque no de la misma forma. Y es que esto es de esperarse, pues en una sociedad como en la que vivimos, el aspecto físico ha sido sobrevalorado hasta el punto de ser percibido como una de las principales cualidades que determina el valor y la belleza de una persona. No es de sorprendernos que estar “gordas” atente contra el ideal de belleza.
Digo que estar gordas atenta contra la belleza, porque actualmente para nosotras esto es sinónimo de ser feas, y en ese orden de ideas, estar delgadas equivale a ser hermosas. Esto ha llegado a tal extremo que, para quienes luchamos con nuestro peso, cuando alguien nos dice que nos ve más delgadas es como si nos hiciera un cumplido. Como si nos estuviera diciendo que somos lindas.
Nuestro cerebro se ha programado para asumir que estar gorda es igual a ser fea y hemos emprendido una carrera a toda costa para estar delgadas o bajar de peso como sea; aunque esto incluya aguantar hambre, comprar productos costosos, hacer las recetas “milagrosas” recomendadas por amigos o que vemos en internet, recetas que finalmente terminan haciéndole daño a nuestro cuerpo, pero no nos importa si logramos nuestro objetivo.
Me asombra ver cómo esta lucha con nuestro cuerpo me afecta, cómo afecta a mis amigas, a mi generación; pero también cómo afecta a los que vienen detrás. Me entristece escuchar a niñas entre los 8 y 12 años decir que no comerán helado o que aunque tienen hambre no pedirán más por temor a engordar. Como alguien que tiene hermanas adolescentes, me angustia pensar cómo reaccionarán cuando su temor se vuelva realidad, cómo se verá afectada su autoestima y su valor cuando efectivamente en algún punto de la vida suban de peso.
Cada vez son mayores las cifras de mujeres que en todas las etapas de la vida luchan con algún tipo de trastorno alimenticio, algunos más graves y visibles que otros, y claramente esto no excluye a la comunidad cristiana. Debemos ser conscientes de esto y no solo verlo como una lucha “normal” de las chicas. Tenemos que proponer una solución al “problema” de estar gordas y obviamente no es dejar de comer o hacer dietas “milagrosas”.
Generalmente entre amigas cuando alguien dice que ha subido de peso, lo primero que hacemos es decirle que no es así, que no exagere, que es mental. En ocasiones sí es así, pero en muchas otras, en realidad sí ha habido un aumento de peso, pero nos negamos a decirlo o confirmarlo, porque precisamente, por el concepto que tenemos de belleza creemos que le estamos diciendo fea o que la haremos sentir mal.
Este ideal tiene que cambiar. Y nosotras las chicas cristianas, que conocemos el evangelio, que lo predicamos y que conocemos la verdad de Dios, debemos ser las primeras en permitir que esas verdades que decimos saber, transformen nuestro corazón; porque hablamos respecto a la verdadera belleza, a la interna, pero entramos en crisis por haber subido un par de kilos. Les decimos a otras que es más importante el carácter que el físico, pero nos angustia lo que otros digan de nuestro peso. Predicamos que el valor y la identidad de una mujer radican en Cristo y no en su físico, pero terminamos encontrando nuestro valor en lo que marque una báscula y diga un espejo.
Creo que a este punto es importante decir que también muchas chicas delgadas luchan con su apariencia y con los constantes comentarios de personas que les dicen que están “muy flacas” o que deberían comer un poco más para verse mejor. Así mismo, el problema de peso es una lucha para ellas; pero seas delgada o no, la verdad de Cristo debe transformar la manera en que percibimos la belleza física.
Las invito a que el evangelio se haga real en cada área de nuestras vidas, que eso que tanto decimos y predicamos podamos vivirlo y aplicarlo; que cada vez que alguna amiga o nosotras mismas entremos en crisis por subir de peso, la solución no sea decirle que no lo está o recomendarle alguna dieta rápida, sino que tengamos la valentía para recordarle a esa amiga que su valor y belleza no dependen de su peso, que este puede aumentar o disminuir, pero su valor en Cristo nunca cambiará. Que no es menos linda ni será menos amada por estar gorda o flaca.
Oro por todas las chicas que luchan con su peso. Oro por ti que lees esto. Oro que las lindas palabras que Cristo dejó en la Biblia respecto a nuestra identidad y valor en él, lleguen a nuestros corazones, y que finalmente entendamos que el índice de masa corporal no es un índice de belleza y valor.
